Wireless Power

I’ve heard that researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have outlined a system to transmit power wirelessly to electronic devices in the home. For more information take a look at this post on ArsTechnica and at this post on the Christian Science Monitor. For details look at this research paper that describes the wireless power proposal in greater detail by MIT faculty and students.

I have also found a web site that already offers wireless power for portable devices. Company name is Splashpower. First products incorporating Splashpower technology will become available during 2007. Take a look at the FAQs.
Splashpower’s not about giving you more technology, it’s about freeing you from the hassles of the technology you already have. With this in mind, Splashpower has developed a convenient new way of powering your mobile phone and other portable electronic devices without wires. It enables you to recharge your portable devices simply by laying them on a SplashPad - no wires, no contacts, no connectors.

Have they (MIT researchers) reinvented the wheel?
I’m confused.

UPDATE: I’ve found the answer in this article from BBC.
