WEP is fine…

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

WEP suffers from two fundamental deficiencies: it was poorly designed and it was poorly implemented. Other than that, it’s fine.”

I’ve heard that researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have outlined a system to transmit power wirelessly to electronic devices in the home. For more information take a look at this post on ArsTechnica and at this post on the Christian Science Monitor. For details look at this research paper that describes the wireless power proposal in greater detail by MIT faculty and students.

I have also found a web site that already offers wireless power for portable devices. Company name is Splashpower. First products incorporating Splashpower technology will become available during 2007. Take a look at the FAQs.
Splashpower’s not about giving you more technology, it’s about freeing you from the hassles of the technology you already have. With this in mind, Splashpower has developed a convenient new way of powering your mobile phone and other portable electronic devices without wires. It enables you to recharge your portable devices simply by laying them on a SplashPad - no wires, no contacts, no connectors.

Have they (MIT researchers) reinvented the wheel?
    I’m confused.

UPDATE: I’ve found the answer in this article from BBC.

Wibree radio technology complements other local connectivity technologies, consuming only a fraction of the power compared to other such radio technologies, enabling smaller and less costly implementations and being easy to integrate with Bluetooth solutions.

Wibree is the first open technology offering connectivity between mobile devices or Personal Computers, and small, button cell battery power devices such as watches, wireless keyboards, toys and sports sensors. By extending the role mobile devices can play in consumers’ lives, this technology increases the growth potential in these market segments.

Here is how wibree official website introduces this new technology from Nokia. I think it will go deep…
